Profile

Profiles help you manage the Internet activities of the devices connected to your network. You can set what time and how many hours a day profiles are allowed to access the Internet and determine what websites to block or allow.

User Profile and Network Profile

A User Profile is a self-defined profile created for a specific user to which you can assign devices for management. There are two types of Network Profiles - My Network (LAN) Profile and Guest Wi-Fi Profile. The former manages devices connected to your local network while the latter governs those connected to your guest Wi-Fi.

To create a User Profile:

  1. Go to Profile and click the plus icon.
  2. Click Start.
  3. Select User Profile and click Next.
  4. Enter a name and upload a photo.
  5. Select the devices you wish to assign to this profile and click Create. If you cannot find your devices, please make sure they are connected to your Synology Router and have not been assigned to another profile.
  6. Click OK to complete the setup.

Note:

To create a Network Profile:

  1. Go to Profile and click the plus icon.
  2. Click Start.
  3. Select My Network (LAN) Profile or Guest Wi-Fi Profile, and click Next.
  4. Click Create to complete the setup.

Profile Status

With icons and hover messages, you can easily monitor the current statuses of each profile.

To view the connection status of a profile:

Go to Profile and find your target profile. The profile icon indicates the following information:

To view the Internet activity of a user profile:

  1. Go to Profile and find your target profile. The timeline indicates the following information:
  2. Click the arrow icon to see the data of Today and Yesterday.

Note:

Internet Schedule

Internet Schedule allows you to set up what time to block or allow Internet access to profiles.

To configure Internet Schedule for a profile:

  1. Go to Profile and find your target profile.
  2. Either click the More icon in the upper-right corner of the profile then select Edit, or click the Set Up under Internet Schedule.
  3. Switch on the toggle to enable Internet Schedule.
  4. Click Blocked or Allowed and select any cells. To select the entire day or hour in each day, click the day or hour.
  5. Click OK to save the changes.

Time Quota

In Time Quota, you can set the daily time allowance of Internet access for your user profiles.

To configure Time Quota for a user profile:

  1. Go to Profile and find your target profile.
  2. Either click the More icon in the upper-right corner of the profile then select Edit, or click the Set Up under Time Quota.
  3. Switch on the toggle to enable Time Quota.
  4. Select how you wish to set the time quota:
  5. Click OK to save the changes.

Web Filter

Targeted at different users, Safe Access provides four preset web filter types with different levels of website screening. You can apply one of the default filters to your profiles, customize your own web filters as a default style, or further personalize the filters according to your needs.

To configure Web Filter for a profile:

  1. Go to Profile and find your target profile.
  2. Either click the More icon in the upper-right corner of the profile and select Edit, or click the Set Web Filter under Inappropriate Attempts.
  3. Switch on the toggle to enable Web Filter.
  4. Select a default web filter to apply:
  5. If you wish to apply extra web filters to specific periods on top of the default styles, select a default profile then click Further personalize a detailed timetable:
    1. Click on any cells.
    2. Select the Web Filter, Start Time, End Time, and Date you wish to apply.
    3. Click OK to continue, or click Delete to delete the settings.
  6. Click OK to save the changes.

Note:

To add a Custom Web Filter:

  1. Go to Profile > Web Filter.
  2. Click Add to create a new web filter.
  3. Name the filter and select a color.
  4. Choose the action you wish to perform with this web filter:
  5. If you chose Block, select the website categories you wish to block then click Next to enter the domains you wish to block.
  6. If you chose Allow, enter the domains you wish to allow.
  7. Click OK to save the changes.

Note:

To edit a Web Filter:

  1. Go to Profile > Web Filter.
  2. Select the Web Filter you wish to edit.
  3. Click Edit to edit the selected web filter.
  4. Edit the details of the web filter.
  5. Click OK to save the changes.

To remove a Web Filter:

  1. Go to Profile > Web Filter.
  2. Select the Web Filter you wish to remove.
  3. Click Remove to remove the selected web filter.

To duplicate a Web Filter:

  1. Go to Profile > Web Filter.
  2. Select the Web Filter you wish to duplicate.
  3. Click Copy to duplicate the selected web filter.

Pause

The Pause function can help you temporarily freeze the Internet access of all devices connected to user profiles by one click.

To pause the Internet connection of a user profile:

  1. Go to Profile and find your target profile.
  2. Click Pause all.

To resume the Internet connection of a user profile:

  1. Go to Profile and find your target profile.
  2. Click Resume to resume the Internet connection.

Reward

With Reward, you can easily grant extra Internet usage time to user profiles without having to change their Internet Schedule and Time Quota.

To reward a user profile:

  1. Go to Profile and find your target profile.
  2. Click Reward.
  3. Set how much extra time you wish to grant the profile.
  4. Click Reward to confirm.

To remove a reward:

  1. Go to Profile and find your target profile.
  2. Click Remove Reward.

Note:

Safe Search

Safe Search integrates restriction modes from YouTube, Google, and Bing. It helps filter out inappropriate, violet and adult content from search results.

To configure Safe Search for a profile:

  1. Go to Profile and find your target profile.
  2. Click the More icon in the upper-right corner of the profile and select Edit.
  3. Switch to Safe Search and enable it by clicking the toggle button.
  4. Select which search engine functions you wish to integrate to Safe Search. YouTube Safe Search provides two levels of restrictions: Strict and Moderate.
  5. Click OK to save the changes.

Access Request

Safe Access provides an option where the administrator can allow profiles to request permission to access blocked websites. As the administrator, you can view the requests at the Access Request page and choose whether to accept or reject them.

To enable Access Request:

  1. Go to Profile > Access Request.
  2. Click the Settings button, and tick the checkbox in the pop-up window to Allow users to request access.

To manage received requests:

  1. Accept: Click Accept to unblock the requested website. Accepting a request adds the website to the allow list of the web filter.
  2. Reject: Click Reject to deny access to the requested website.

Block Page Style

You can customize the appearance of the block page according to your needs and preference. The customized block page will appear when a user is denied by your web-filter configuration.

To customize the block page:

  1. Go to Profile > Block Page Style.
  2. Edit the following items:

Advanced Settings

If Web Filter is enabled for a profile, Safe Access will block Apple’s iCloud Private Relay service to prevent web filter and safe search from malfunctioning by default.

To disable iCloud Private Relay blocking:

  1. Go to Profile and find your target profile.
  2. Click the More icon in the upper-right corner of the profile and select Edit.
  3. Go to the Advanced tab.
  4. Clear the option for Block iCloud Private Relay.
